About this painting
After reading the story of Jesus, it’s impossible to ignore the importance of his mother, Mary. As a parent I now feel a deeper understanding of her faith and sacrifice. She was so young and innocent, yet so brave and devoted to God, that she said yes to the most intimate and challenging question of all. Her bravery and devotion is astounding. She faced constant persecution and rejection from the world, yet remained steadfast in her calling. She is the ultimate model of faith and obedience.
After several reference drawings, I felt called to try to capture her inner beauty and innocence in a painting, to see if I could even do it. She is looking up at the heavens, with a calm awe and devotion. She has light cast on her and coming from her heart. Her hands are folded as if in prayer, holding white Lillies, the symbol of her purity. Thank you Mary.
