About the painting

After reading about Jesus’ Transfiguration, I felt called to try to paint it. A pivotal event in the New Testament, where Jesus revealed his divine glory on a mountain to the three disciples—Peter, James, and John. The event is described in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-13, and Luke 9:28-36), as well as referenced in the Second Epistle of Peter. While praying, Jesus' face shone like the sun and his clothing became dazzling white, "as light". Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets) appeared alongside him. They discussed Jesus' impending departure (or "exodus") to be accomplished in Jerusalem. A bright cloud overshadowed them, and God’s voice spoke: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

In this painting I have focused on the three central figures, as the disciples may have seen them. Taking us closer to the event, as if seeing it for the first time. They are engulfed in a supernatural force and light from above Jesus in the centre. On the left is Moses and on the right is the prophet Elijah, who are both looking in wonder at Jesus, the messiah. I wanted to show the movement and power in this supernatural event. It is set later in the day, to create a contrast and emphasise the bright cloud and light from above, highlighting the white of their robes and their connection to God.
