About the painting
This was a hard painting to make, as it shows Jesus in his final moments of suffering. The reality of what he faced for us is hard to comprehend. I felt called to paint it, as part of my series of paintings of Him. I endured a type of suffering in doing it, as it brought me closer to his torment. Pain is part of life and can teach us many things. But to understand His suffering and sacrifice brings us closer to understanding his love for us.
We see Mary Magdelen in despair and anguish at the foot of the cross. The Virgin Mary, his mother is praying, whilst his disciple John looks on in shock. They form a triangle, or trinity of human emotion as they suffer with him. They lead the eye back up to Jesus on the cross. The sky is darkening and in the background we see Jerusalem, where the temple is about to be destroyed, as prophesised.
Jesus died on the cross for many reasons, as a voluntary, substitutionary sacrifice to atone for all human sin, reconciling humanity with God. His death was not the end, but the beginning of the fulfilment of a divine plan to overcome evil, break the power of death and offer true forgiveness. As it is also the moment the Holy Spirit was released to all of us and were all given the gift of eternal life with Him.
So I created this painting, as a moment to remember and to be thankful.
