Part of a series of original paintings of views around East Sussex, where I live, this painting depicts the Beachy Head Lighthouse, a famous operational landmark situated at the foot of Britain's highest chalk sea cliff near Eastbourne in East Sussex. Painted in an Impressionistic Realism style, using oil on canvas.
About the painting
After painting the Seven Sisters, I wanted to create another oil painting of the East Sussex coastline called Beachy Head. This view reminds me of my grandparents, as they used to sit and eat sandwiches, looking out at this view. It was a favourite place for them to visit, during their retirement years and my sister and I often went there with them, as children. It is a beautiful and dramatic view of the English Channel, on a clear Spring day, you can see for miles around. The calming scene is full of life and colour, with the fields in bloom overlooking the calm sea.
The lighthouse stands in isolation, vulnerable to the weather, a protector of the coast, and especially in the dark. All night it casts its light out to sea, as a warning to passing boats, protecting them from harm. It reminds me of God and how he is always looking out for us, even when we are asleep.
