An intimate 30 x 40 cm oil painting, of a hooded lion in profile against a stark black background, executed in a style of contemporary realism and dramatic chiaroscuro. The composition features a lifelike lion's face adorned in a rough, woven burlap hood, with a strong side-light illuminating the textures of its muzzle, whiskers, and thoughtful eye to create a majestic yet humble portrait of the Lion of Judah.

About the painting
I wanted to create a painting of Jesus with a lion, to represent The Lion of Judah, but I was given this idea, of a portrait of a Lion in Jesus’s hood, combining the two in one. The Lion is in profile, wearing the same type of hood I used from previous paintings of Jesus, symbolic of first century clothing. From this angle he looks almost human (anthropomorphic). He is deep in thought, looking to the future with confidence and the quiet strength of a top predator, the king of kings.
In Revelation 5:5, it connects Jesus to the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament, declaring His victory over sin and death: "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.'"
As Jacob in Genesis 49:9-10, also blesses his son Judah and compares his lineage to a lion. "Judah is a lion’s cub; you have returned from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come..." (Genesis 49:9-10).
