An original 30 x 40 cm oil painting depicting a tangled bramble of wild blackberries, executed in a lush style of botanical impressionistic realism. The organic composition captures the life cycle of a wild hedgerow, showcasing clusters of berries in various stages of ripening—ranging from tight green and unripened red to plump, glossy black—interwoven among a dense canopy of rich, textured green foliage.

About the painting
A painting based on a photograph I took in our local woods. Each day I walk the dog along the narrow paths of our local area, in Brighton. The summer of 2026 was hotter than normal and so the blackberries came early. The brambles that grow wild are like the events in life that grow and can tangle in our minds and spirit. But thanks to the grace of God, they also bear gifts for the world. Like the fruit of the spirit they are unique and can provide nourishment once mature.
Each berry is in a different state of development, they are all growing at different rates, depending on how much light they receive, yet the colours compliment and make a beautiful arrangement. Our instincts tell us that some are ready to eat, whilst others are still developing to maturity. So it is with the fruit of my own spirit, some is ready to share, whilst other parts are still growing in faith and acceptance. And so I wanted to capture this moment of transition, of the ever-changing internal and external seasons of life.
